Sex Abuse Victims Pursue Compensation within the Catholic Church

Over the course of a year spanning June 2024 to March 2025, 77 individuals expressed a potential interest in receiving financial reparations for the atrocities inflicted upon them.

Among this group, 55 cases are directly within the jurisdiction of Diocesan Commissions, while the remaining 22 pertain to Institutes of Consecrated Life. As of now, 40 individuals have already been given a hearing by the Instruction Commissions — a CEP source hinted that this number could grow to 70 by the end of July. The opinions are expected to be produced by September, following the round of hearings.

Once this initial phase is complete, the Compensation Fixation Commission will take over, determining the appropriate value to attribute to each desperate individual's ordeal.

The president of CEP, José Ornelas, expressed his satisfaction with the process's progress, noting it aligns with the pre-established guidelines. Emphasizing the emphasis on not causing further trauma to the victims, he remarked, "We've tried our best to minimize re-traumatization."

Ornelas went on to commend the contributions of the Vita Group, acknowledging their essential role in steering the proceedings with integrity and diligence. "They've played a critical role in maintaining order and carrying out detailed studies. It's been a great collaborative effort," he lauded.

The Vita Group has prepared control instruments to disseminate among institutions, asserting that these will provide "an invaluable response capability for detection." Moreover, there are already people and institutions utilizing these tools to safeguard their children and adolescents from potential harm.

Ornelas cautioned that the majority of such incidents transpire within familial units, which poses a significant challenge for institutions to intervene. He emphasized the competence of the people within the dioceses to handle the cases that may arise in the future, given their demonstrated efforts to provide sympathetic attention to the victims.

In addition to these measures, Ornelas warned that the institutions must be vigilant to recognize any signs that may suggest the need for intervention. Addressing the media following the 211th Plenary Assembly, he reiterated, "Our primary goal is to ensure proper treatment and protection for these unfortunate individuals."
