Orphan's Pension: Pension Insurance Demands New Evidence - Germany's Orphan Pension to Rise 3.5% in 2025, Impacting 270,000 Recipients

The German Pension Insurance is set to adjust the orphan's pension (Waisenrente) in 2025 due to a scheduled general pension increase of approximately 3.5%. This change, effective July 1, 2025, will also impact survivor benefits, including the orphan's pension. Currently, around 270,000 children and young people, about one percent of all pensions from the statutory insurance, receive this support.

The orphan's pension, a benefit from the statutory pension insurance in Germany, financially secures children after the loss of a parent. The amount depends on the pension entitlements of the deceased parent and is typically in the lower range, with annual adjustments. It is usually paid until the recipient turns 18, but may continue until the age of 27 under certain conditions.

The German Pension Insurance is demanding new evidence for orphan's pension recipients. In September, verification letters will be sent to current recipients, requiring them to prove that they continue to meet the payment conditions. Acceptable evidence includes filled-out forms confirmed by training institutions, training contracts, certificates, or official certificates. Up-to-date documents about the training status must be provided to continue receiving the pension.

The upcoming changes to the orphan's pension highlight the importance of regular verification of recipients' eligibility. The German Pension Insurance's efforts ensure that this support, which currently aids around 270,000 children and young people, remains targeted and effective.
