Germany's Customs Raid Construction Sites to Combat Illegal Employment
German customs authorities are conducting nationwide checks on construction sites today. Around 2,800 officers are involved in the operation, targeting undeclared work and illegal employment. This includes verifying proper employee registration, social benefits, work permits, residence titles, and minimum wage payments.
The inspections, led by the Customs Financial Control Office (FKS), are risk-oriented and targeted. They aim to ensure compliance with labor and social security laws, which impose penalties for violations. All employees in the sector are entitled to the minimum wage, currently 12.82 euros gross per hour. In some trades, sector-specific minimums apply.
The checks will continue throughout the day and into the evening, with initial results expected tomorrow. This operation is part of the authorities' ongoing efforts to combat illegal employment and protect workers' rights.
Today's inspections by the customs authorities highlight their commitment to fair labor practices in the construction industry. They aim to ensure all workers receive their entitled wages and benefits, and that employers comply with relevant laws. Preliminary results from the operation will be released tomorrow.
