Germany Reinstates Border Controls, Cuts Irregular Migration by 8,658 Cases
The German Federal Ministry of the Interior has temporarily reinstated internal border controls at all Schengen borders within Germany, effective from September 16, 2024. This move aims to tackle irregular migration concerns and protect internal security.
In the region of Baden-Württemberg, the Federal Police has been actively enforcing these controls. Between September 16, 2024, and April 30, 2025, they detected 8,658 unauthorized global entries at the borders with Switzerland and France. In response, entry-preventing or residence-terminating measures were taken in 7,340 cases.
During this period, 7,105 people were rejected entry and 235 had their residence terminated. Additionally, 344 individuals were prevented from entering due to a re-entry ban. The police also arrested 86 suspected smugglers and initiated 858 criminal proceedings.
The temporary border controls, initially set for six months, have led to a significant reduction in irregular secondary migration in Baden-Württemberg. The Federal Police's efforts have resulted in numerous arrests and criminal proceedings, demonstrating the government's commitment to maintaining internal security.
