German Auto Dealers Urge Pragmatism in Electromobility Push

The Association of German Automobile Dealers (VAD), representing around 6,000 dealerships and over 300,000 employees, has presented a position paper to Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and cabinet members. The paper focuses on electromobility, aiming to balance climate goals with practical considerations.

VAD supports the government's climate objectives but urges more pragmatism in promoting electromobility. Despite growing interest in electric vehicles, customers remain cautious due to high purchase prices, electricity costs, limited ranges, and insufficient charging infrastructure.

The association proposes a three-part strategy to bolster Germany's automotive industry and stabilize sales. Firstly, it advocates against banning internal combustion engines. Secondly, it suggests improving conditions for electric vehicles. Lastly, it emphasizes the importance of digitalization and information to enhance competitiveness and location attractiveness.

The new industry organization, founded by VAD, comprises independent automotive dealers and relevant stakeholders. It has proposed central initiatives to foster climate change innovation, prioritize political dialogue in Berlin and Brussels, and encourage strategic discussions on regulations, sustainability, and digital transformation across the supply chain.

VAD's position paper highlights the need for a balanced approach to climate change. By advocating for practical solutions and improved conditions, the association seeks to strengthen Germany's automotive industry and stabilize sales. The new industry organization aims to drive innovation, prioritize political dialogue, and foster strategic discussions to address key challenges in the sector.
