In Jüchen, the development of concepts for the post-mining lake is nearing its conclusion. A comprehensive planning workshop on lake development is set to take place on October 28, at the Peter-Giesen-Hall, inviting residents from Mönchengladbach, Jüchen, Grevenbroich, Erkelenz, Titz, and Bedburg, as well as businesses, organizations, associations, and municipal administrations.

The upcoming phase-out of brown coal power will significantly transform the region, with Garzweiler Lake—one of North Rhine-Westphalia's largest lakes—expected to emerge around the mid-2030s. The lake, approximately 160 meters deep and covering around 2,200 hectares, will be home to over 450,000 residents.

Since 2024, concrete plans have been developed with public involvement, focusing mainly on the potential uses of the lake. The master plan also encompasses the development and design of the shore areas, as well as the development stages during the lake's creation and filling process, which will span several decades.

The master plan aims to create a climate-neutral district, ensuring a sustainable future for the area while minimizing the environmental impact of the mine's closure. The plan includes opportunities for recreation and tourism, as well as provisions for community growth and development to maintain the area's economic viability and social vibrancy.

In the midst of these plans, the process of creating the lake and redeveloping the area has been a subject of controversy, particularly due to the destruction of nearby villages like Lützerath. Nevertheless, the ultimate vision is to convert the post-mining landscape into a flourishing, sustainable community.
