Celebrating the Spirit of Benazir Bhutto

Today, we honor the birth of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, born on June 21, 1953, in the vibrant city of Karachi. A day filled with joy for the Bhutto family, as they welcomed a compassionate and sensitive child with a heart as strong as hers was tender.

On this very day, her father, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, would later pen a heartfelt letter to his daughter, reminiscing her childhood. This poignant correspondence, published in the book My Most Beloved Daughter, paints a picture of a girl so moved by the death of a pigeon that she spent the entire day in tears and refused to eat. The same girl, on her 25th birthday, received an extraordinary gift — the "hand of the people" from her father's death cell. A truly remarkable girl who would grow to challenge the harshest forces, ultimately giving her life to defend Pakistan at the tender age of 54.

Benazir Bhutto once wrote about her last meeting with her father, the day before his execution. With a heavy heart, she vowed to carry forward her father's mission. For the next 30 years of her life, she tirelessly worked to fulfill this promise, enduring immense hardships and suffering.

What was this mission? A well-defined program rooted in empowering the people and bolstering Pakistan's defense. Bhutto firmly believed that no democratic system could thrive in a militarily weak state. This was the essence of his philosophy.

In these volatile times, the importance of this philosophy is increasingly evident. Democacies and the quest for strong, stable states must go hand in hand. The legacy of Benazir Bhutto serves as a testament to this truth.

The Bhutto era was marked by formidable challenges, not just for democratic Pakistan but for its security and sovereignty as well. Benazir Bhutto not only revived democracy through peaceful protests against military dictators, but she also took unprecedented steps to fortify Pakistan's defense.

Today, on her birth anniversary, let us remember and revere the extraordinary contributions Benazir Bhutto made in securing Pakistan's defense. It is widely acknowledged that her father laid the groundwork for Pakistan's nuclear program, while she played a key role in establishing its modern missile program.

From acquiring nuclear technology from France and other countries to negotiating defense agreements with China, Benazir Bhutto left an indelible mark on Pakistan's strategic defense. During her term as Prime Minister, she kickstarted the Hatf missile program, which was ultimately tested successfully.

The Pakistan People's Party remains the only political party in the country whose leadership has sacrificed for both democracy and Pakistan's security. Benazir Bhutto, even in exile, continued to fight for democracy and strategic strength.

In her own words, "I am the one who can secure modern weapons for Pakistan from other countries, I am the one who can bring F-16s from the United States and Mirage jets from France." Despite the challenges, she persisted, ensuring that the ideology she championed would live on.

Benazir Bhutto's mission lives on today through her son and Pakistan People's Party Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He continues to rally for both democratic ideals and Pakistan’s strategic strength.

As we remember and celebrate Benazir Bhutto on this special day, let us not forget her profound commitment to democracy and Pakistan's defense. As the poet Gazali expressed, "Even after you, some people did pass by, But your spirit never left the path." Benazir Bhutto's spirit will continue to guide us, lighting our way as we strive for a democratic, secure, and prosperous Pakistan.
