Five casualties were reported following an explosion at a chemical manufacturing facility in China.
In Gaomi, a city of about 900,000 residents in Shandong province, eastern China, a chemical plant explosion has resulted in at least five deaths, six missing persons, and 19 injuries. The incident occurred on May 27, 2025, around noon local time.
The site of the blast is the Shandong Youdao Chemical plant, known for producing low-toxicity pesticides. More than 230 emergency responders, aided by 55 vehicles, have been on the scene since the explosion. Search and rescue efforts persisted through the evening.
The explosion left various buildings damaged, with debris scattered along roads and smashed windows up to a kilometer away. Plumes of grey and orange smoke billowed into the sky, and fires continued to burn in the industrial area.
As of the latest reports, six individuals remain unaccounted for, while 19 others received injuries in the incident. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Authorities have yet to release the results of their investigations or air quality tests.
Previous concerns have been raised by residents, including local farmers, regarding the plant's proximity to residential areas and its odor, especially at night.
Incidents like these have occurred previously in China's industrial sector. In August 2024, an explosion at the port of Ningbo caused damages valued at 90 million yuan. An investigation in April that year revealed a chemical leak from an improperly cooled container as the root cause of the explosion.
An even deadlier tragedy took place in Tianjin in 2015, when several explosions at a warehouse storing flammable chemicals claimed over 170 lives.
