Finnair Aims for Net-Zero Emissions by 2050 with Ambitious 2033 Targets
Finnish airline Finnair has set ambitious climate goals, aiming to significantly reduce its carbon footprint. The airline plans to cut its CO2 emission intensity by 34.5% by 2033 compared to 2023, with a longer-term target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
To reach these targets, Finnair is exploring multiple strategies. It plans to use sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) for about half of its targeted CO2 reduction. These fuels, made from renewable resources, can reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.
Additionally, Finnair is working to improve operational efficiency and optimize its network to further reduce emissions. This includes optimizing flight routes, improving aircraft performance, and investing in modern, fuel-efficient aircraft. The airline also aims to reduce its total CO2e emissions by around 13% by 2033.
Finnish airline Finnair's climate goals have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), ensuring they are in line with the Paris Agreement's target to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. By pursuing these ambitious targets, Finnair is committed to playing its part in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
