In a groundbreaking move, Italian automaker Fiat has joined forces with U.S. battery-swap specialist Ample to revolutionise urban mobility. The partnership aims to implement battery-swap technology in Fiat's popular urban vehicle, the 500e, as test mules in Madrid, Spain.

The collaboration promises significant enhancements in fleet operational efficiency and an improved user experience, particularly for car-sharing services. The battery-swap system allows for a full recharge in under five minutes, a stark contrast to traditional charging times. This rapid turnaround maximises fleet uptime, enabling vehicles to remain in service longer without extended waiting for battery recharging.

Fleet availability is a key focus of the Madrid pilot, where Free2move operates a fleet of Fiat 500e cars equipped for battery swapping. The initiative started with 40 vehicles and plans to expand to 100 by mid-2025, reflecting confidence in the scalability and operational efficiency of the technology.

By minimising vehicle downtime and reducing dependency on conventional charging infrastructure, the battery-swapping approach significantly cuts operational costs. The system offers a flexible and scalable alternative to fixed charging stations, which often require significant investment and maintenance. Efficient battery swaps reduce the costs associated with slow charging and fleet management inefficiencies.

For car-share users, the technology addresses common concerns such as "range anxiety" – the fear of running out of battery mid-trip. The quick battery exchanges make using EVs more seamless and convenient, as drivers can resume their journeys almost immediately after swapping, eliminating recharge wait times. This collaboration promotes a simple, effortless driving experience that encourages urban sustainable mobility.

Fiat CEO Olivier Francois believes Ample's technology will significantly reduce range anxiety for car-share users, a common deterrent for hiring battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). The goal is to eventually expand the battery-swap technology to private customers.

Stellantis, Fiat's parent company, is supplying a fleet of Fiat 500e vehicles to Free2move for trials of Ample's battery-swap technology in Madrid. The Fiat 500e's flexible platform is being converted to hybrid powertrains and fitted with Ample's swappable battery packs for the trials.

Madrid was chosen as the testing ground due to the city's commitment to emissions reduction and high EV adoption, making it an ideal location to evaluate this innovative mobility solution. This partnership marks the Fiat 500e as the first European electric car to support battery-swapping technology, initially targeted at car-sharing services with plans to expand in the future.
