Europe Unites to Protect Steel Sector Amid Green Transition
Politicians and industry leaders are pushing for stronger protection of Europe's steel sector to support its transition to green production. The Left party, SPD, and Green Party have all voiced support for measures to safeguard the industry and its employees.
Green Party leader Felix Banaszak has called for Europe to become a leading market for green steel, emphasizing the need for green markets, expanded hydrogen infrastructure, and lower electricity prices. He warns that half-hearted efforts in protecting the industry would put Europe at a competitive disadvantage.
The SPD's executive board is set to approve a concept to protect the steel industry, including 'Buy-European' rules and robust trade protection. The party advocates for preferentially using steel produced in Europe for important areas like infrastructure. The SPD's 500-billion-euro investment package will prioritize the use of European steel. Meanwhile, the Green Party will monitor the SPD's ideas on protecting the steel industry once they are implemented.
Banaszak supports the SPD's proposal for 'Buy-European' rules, and the Left party emphasizes that industry protection measures must also protect employees. The organization WV Stahl demands protective trade measures for the energy sector, describing these as essential to ensure internationally competitive energy costs and strengthen the industry quickly. Banaszak also advocates for clear sustainability quotas and protective tariffs against dumping imports.
With the support of various political parties and industry leaders, Europe is moving towards stronger protection for its steel sector. These measures aim to support the industry's transition to climate-neutral production, safeguard jobs, and maintain Europe's industrial strength in the global market.
