EU Parliament Fails to Agree on Sustainability Omnibus; U.S. EPA Paused by Shutdown
The European Parliament has failed to reach a consensus on the sustainability Omnibus ahead of the October 13 vote. Meanwhile, in the U.S., the ongoing government shutdown has paused environmental regulations and research at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The Omnibus law, which includes the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), corporate regulations, and climate transition plans, has faced resistance from negotiators in the European Union. The lead negotiator's name remains undisclosed. In Brazil, cryptocurrency mining companies are flocking to the country due to its abundance in renewable power and minimal crypto mining activity. Renova Energia is set to launch a $200 million, 100 megawatt wind-powered cryptocurrency mining operation.
The U.S. government shutdown has left nearly 90% of EPA staff furloughed, halting regulatory work, research, and public updates. President Trump has threatened mass firings at affected agencies. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is currently unable to issue new policies or renewals, impacting 4.7 million properties. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) continues forecasting but has suspended nonessential research.
The European Union is expected to revisit the Omnibus agreement, while the U.S. government shutdown continues to affect environmental protections and services. The EPA's pause in operations may have significant implications for climate change and environmental regulations.
