EU-Backed Battery Recycling Plant to Open in 2027

A new lithium-ion battery recycling plant is set to open in Dormagen's CHEMPARK in 2027. The facility, backed by €26.1 million from the EU's EFRE/JTF program in NRW, will initially process black mass from spent batteries. The plant aims to recover crucial materials like lithium, graphite, cobalt, nickel, and manganese, promoting a circular economy.

The plant, named cylib GmbH, is the brainchild of founders Dr. Lilian Schwich and Paul Sabarny. They established the company following Dr. Schwich's dissertation submission, with the exact founding year unspecified. The company's innovative OLiC process recovers over 90% of critical materials from end-of-life batteries, significantly reducing CO2 emissions by 80% compared to primary raw material extraction.

In its final expansion stage, the plant will have the capacity to process up to 140,000 electric vehicle batteries annually. This initial funding will support the first expansion phase, with the plant's full operation slated for 2027.
