ETIAS Fee to Rise to €20 for Visa-Exempt Travelers in Late 2026
The European Commission has announced an increase in the fee for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) to €20 per application. This revision, set to take effect in late 2026 when ETIAS becomes fully operational, will affect travellers from over 60 visa-exempt countries entering the Schengen and European area, comprising 29 European countries.
ETIAS, designed to enhance border management and internal security, will require non-European nationals to complete an online application before departure. An automated authorisation process will be in place for most applications, with an authorisation valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. The new fee aims to cover the operational costs of the system.
The revised fee of €20 will apply to travellers from countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia, among others, who currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area. Certain categories, including individuals under 18 or over 70, will be exempt from the fee. Once approved, the ETIAS authorisation will be checked by carriers and border authorities prior to and upon entry into participating countries.
The ETIAS fee revision, expected to come into effect in late 2026, will introduce a €20 charge for eligible non-European travellers entering the Schengen and European area. This change aims to ensure the system's operational costs are adequately covered while maintaining visa-free travel for eligible nationals.
