Entrepreneurs registered for barbershop appointments
In the bustling cities of Russia, the hairdressing and barbershop sector has seen a significant shift in business trends. According to recent data, the number of hairdressing salons in million-plus cities increased by 2% to 31,700 points, while the number of barbershops grew by 16%, reaching 10,100 points.
This growth in the number of salons and barbershops can be attributed to the increasing preference for franchises among entrepreneurs. The lower entry threshold for franchises compared to ready-made businesses has made them an attractive option for many. In fact, the buyers of hairdressing salon franchises are mainly housewives who lack experience in managing a salon.
The demand for standalone hairdressing salons outside of franchises has only increased by 8% year-over-year, indicating a clear trend towards franchising. This trend is further supported by the 52% year-over-year increase in the volume of franchises supply in the segment during the summer of 2025.
However, it's important to note that the initial franchise fee decreased by 34% year-over-year, to 590,000 rubles. This could be a sign of increased competition in the franchising market, leading to lower fees for potential franchisees.
Despite the advantages, franchising is not without its challenges. Franchisors often promise franchisees that they will do almost everything for the entrepreneur, but this is not always the case. Disputes and lawsuits have arisen due to these unfulfilled promises, underscoring the importance of thorough research and due diligence before investing in a franchise.
On the other hand, ready-made businesses are still being sold, often due to business struggles or emigration and relocation of the population. A ready-made salon is typically sold when it is facing losses. The number of ads for selling ready-made businesses without franchises has increased by 50%, indicating a continued presence of this business model.
Despite the challenges, the sector as a whole is thriving. In January-August 2025, the volume of hairdressing and cosmetology services provided grew by 19% year-on-year, to 179.7 billion rubles. This growth is also reflected in the average check, which grew by 10%, to 1,800 rubles.
Ilya Dudkovsky, director of the business department of "Avito Business 360", believes that franchising allows starting a business with minimal risks. He emphasises the potential for success in the sector, stating, "The demand for hairdressing salon and barbershop franchises increased almost threefold year-over-year."
However, it's crucial to approach any business venture with caution and a thorough understanding of the market. For those considering entering the hairdressing and barbershop sector, both franchising and purchasing a ready-made business present opportunities, each with their unique set of advantages and challenges.
