Energy provider EnBW offers a "Summer Special" for Ionity electric vehicle charging stations. However, the discount will not be available in Germany, only other regions.
In a move that could significantly impact electric vehicle (EV) drivers across Europe, energy provider EnBW has launched a summer promotion offering a more cost-effective option for charging at Ionity fast-charging stations in 14 countries until September 15, 2025.
The promotion, available via the ‘EnBW mobility+’ app or charging card, offers a uniform €0.59 per kWh across Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and the Czech Republic. This price is accessible to all users, regardless of the tariff selected in the EnBW app, and requires only registration – no subscription is necessary.
In contrast, Ionity's own pricing varies by country, making EnBW’s promotional rate a cheaper and simpler alternative for fast charging at Ionity points in those countries. Notably, in Germany, the rate via EnBW remains higher at €0.74 per kWh, so the cost advantage is local-market dependent.
The promotion applies to all tariff levels (S, M, and L) and customers with EnBW electricity or gas contracts and partner tariffs, including business customers. This means that businesses can also benefit from the promotion, regardless of their tariff level or whether they are Business Professional S, M, or L.
The promotion, which became effective since July 7, 2023, offers a significant discount compared to Ionity's own pricing, typically exceeding €0.59/kWh. As a result, for EV drivers charging at Ionity stations in the promoted countries, using the EnBW app or card can provide a distinctly more affordable solution than charging directly via the Ionity app, at least during the promotion valid through mid-September 2025.
It is worth noting that the comparison does not account for the registration via the EnBW app being sufficient to enjoy the reduced price of the promotion, nor does it mention that no paid subscription is required for the promotion. Moreover, in some countries, users of the Ionity app may pay less than the EnBW tariff, even without a subscription.
While Ionity has not lowered its pricing in response to this promotion, the EnBW offer, with its simplicity and competitive pricing, is currently the more cost-effective option in the 14 countries where it is available. The price comparison for fast-charging stations' prices abroad is worth considering, as the EnBW tariff may be more beneficial in certain countries.
The price promotion offered by EnBW, accessible through the 'EnBW mobility+' app or charging card, is currently the more cost-effective option for fast charging at Ionity stations in 14 countries, with a uniform €0.59 per kWh across various European countries until September 15, 2025. In contrast, technology-led advancements in financing, transportation, and the growing industry of electric vehicles may influence future pricing strategies in this sector.
