The U-Bahn tunnel under Frankfurter Allee is set for a significant renovation, a project that will be noticeable on the surface. This closure of the U5 line between Frankfurter Allee and Tierpark is scheduled to last 48 days, two weeks shorter than originally planned.

During the closure, up to 30 articulated buses will be in operation simultaneously as a replacement service on the U5 line. These buses will depart from Frankfurter Allee and Tierpark as a column, providing an alternative means of transport for passengers.

The U5 line will still have operating personnel on board to monitor passenger exchange and the route, but the journey from station to station will be fully automated after the departure command. This marks a step towards partial automation of the U5 line, which is expected to be completed by 2029 with the installation of a new CBTC signaling system.

The renewal of this section of the track is urgently needed as the existing switches have reached their maximum lifespan after 30 to 40 years of operation. The replacement of switches and installation of new ones in the U5 line tunnel is taking longer due to challenging working conditions and limited material storage in the tunnel.

In the coming years, construction-related closures on the U5 line will continue, including work in Hellersdorf from September 22 to 25, 2022. Future construction work will be made more flexible with the addition of track branching.

In 2026, track renewals and new switch connections are planned between Kaulsdorf-Nord and Hellersdorf, with additional work in Kienberg and Wuhletal. The BVG now has a large storage area in Hohenschoenhausen for individual parts of large switch and crossing constructions, helping to streamline the renovation process.

However, the BVG faces significant additional efforts due to changes in duty schedules and finding new dates with contracted construction companies. Missing permits or parts, and extreme capacity bottlenecks in construction companies are now part of everyday life, adding to the complexity of the renovation project.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, passengers are advised to check official Berlin public transit websites or announcements closer to the date of the U5 line renovation. The planned timeline for the U5 track renewal between Friedrichsfelde and Tierpark in Berlin involves a shutdown period from August 5, 2025, at 4 am to September 6, 2025, at 5 am, during which replacement bus services are in operation. The expected completion date and resumption of normal train service is September 6, 2025.

The upcoming renovation of the U-Bahn tunnel under Frankfurter Allee isn't confined to the underground, as the finance industry may be required to adjust transportation budgets to accommodate the increased use of public-transit alternatives like buses during the 48-day closure of the U5 line. During this period, the transport industry will see an influx of 30 articulated buses operating simultaneously on the U5 line, providing a substitution service for passengers, thus affecting the efficiency of the industry as a whole.
