Three Days of Silence on the Kiel Canal

The bustling Kiel Canal has transformed into a tranquil waterway, as ships are barred entry since Monday night. This move was initiated by the trade union Verdi, aiming to escalate wage negotiations in the public sector.

The economic fallout is substantial. The without-ship scenario means a significant loss of income for pilots, canal pilots, and brokers, with the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) estimating a "prosperity loss" of over 1.5 million euros per day in Germany back in 2021.

"The strike leaves us high and dry," says Klaus Peter Molter, chair of the canal pilots' association. With around 125 members guiding large vessels throughout the canal, these professionals are facing a waiting game until the strike concludes on Thursday. Similarly, over 300 canal pilots, along with employees from ship suppliers and brokers, are also bracing for the impact. More than 3,000 jobs depend on the canal's smooth operation.

"Our customers aren't thrilled. It impacts around 70 to 80 ships a day that are now taking the long route around Skagen," says Jan Klein, managing director of the brokerage UCA United Canal Agency. Moreover, Klein adds that the canal closure results in increased carbon emissions as the displaced ships speed up to meet their schedules.

One example is the Maersk Line shipping company from Copenhagen, whose container ship "Laura Maersk" passed through the canal on Monday, taking it as one of the last on its Bremerhaven-to-Fredericia journey. The return trip to Bremerhaven has been canceled, as the ship will instead travel from Gothenburg via Skagen.

The Leverage of a Handful

"The strike readiness among our members is quite high," says Frank Schischefsky of the trade union Verdi. Interestingly, verdi has successfully paralyzed the canal with only a handful of members. This new reality in system-relevant areas, where positions were previously manned by civil servants, allows Verdi to exert more pressure.

The nautical officers in the traffic control center in Brunsbüttel, who monitor the canal, were also rarely influenced by strike calls due to the prevalence of civil servants. However, this has changed, and Schischefsky is urging Verdi members at brokers and canal pilots to go on strike in solidarity to secure strike pay.

"The strike not only affects us financially but also tarnishes the reputation of the Kiel Canal during these challenging times," criticizes Jens-Broder Knudsen of the initiative Kiel Canal.

Full Steam Ahead for the Navy

While the Kiel Canal is mostly empty, barges continue to sail in Kiel and at the eastern end. Dredging work is ongoing and, according to Jörg Brockmann, spokesperson for the Waterways and Shipping Office North-Ostsee-Kanal, doesn't need traffic management for these vessels.

One exception was the navy, with the corvette "Emden," which left its Hamburg shipyard earlier than scheduled on Monday. Shortly after 8 p.m., it was admitted to Brunsbüttel as one of the last ships.

  1. In the midst of the strike, financially strapped pilots are expecting a lengthy waiting game until the negotiations conclude, as their jobs rely heavily on the smooth operation of the Kiel Canal.
  2. The closure of the Kiel Canal has led to a substantial disruption in the transportation industry, with around 70 to 80 ships a day being diverted, resulting in increased carbon emissions and a less efficient general-news flow for businesses.
  3. Verdi, the trade union orchestrating the strike, wields significant influence in system-relevant areas, as demonstrated by their success in paralyzing the canal with only a handful of members, even in traditionally civil-servant positions like the nautical officers in the traffic control center.
  4. Beyond the economic implications, the strike also tarnishes the reputation of the Kiel Canal, according to Jens-Broder Knudsen of the initiative Kiel Canal, especially during these challenging times when the canal's smooth operation is crucial for public-transit and energy sectors, among others.
  5. Meanwhile, the navy seems unfazed by the strike, with the corvette "Emden" departing its Hamburg shipyard earlier than scheduled on Monday and successfully navigating through the still operational Kiel Canal.
  6. The political and legislative landscape of strikes such as this one, particularly in strategic locations like the Kiel Canal or the Danish Straits or the Strait of Hormuz, war-and-conflicts situations can influence, as these waterways play a crucial role in global finance, energy, and transportation, impacting crime-and-justice and other sectors on a larger scale.
