Switched Over to Animation Production After a Decade in Project Management

Hey ya'll, it might seem like a twist of fate to some - but in 2020, I took a bold leap from being a project manager and head of digital to becoming a producer at an animated series company. The trigger for this change wasn't just random - it made sense on a personal and professional level for me.

I've always had a soft spot for cinema, having studied it at university. Over the years, my enthusiasm for movies never waned, and when the chance came to join a studio and produce an animated series, I took it without a second thought. It was a rollercoaster - juggling creative ambitions with real-world constraints, aligning writers, publishers, and creative teams, and ensuring we were all telling the same story, just in different ways.

The ride taught me a lot about how to wield storytelling as a business weapon - not just for script-reviewing, but for leading people. It showed me how to gather creative and strategic minds together, how to listen differently, and how to inspire without being overly process-focused. When I returned to agency life, I brought all of that knowledge back with me.

Storytelling in Business - More Than Meets the Eye

You might be surprised to hear that storytelling in film isn't just about entertainment - it's actually neuroscience. Good storytelling triggers dopamine, oxytocin - the chemicals that make us care. And it's just as valuable in a pitch meeting or strategy session as it is in a cinema.

In business, if you can tell a good story - one that frames the problem, creates tension, and resolves in a meaningful way - you've got a significant advantage. It's about inspiring your team, aligning with clients, and driving change. storytelling is like an ace up your sleeve, because it's not just about managing work - it's about shaping how people feel about it.

Managing a Mixed Bag Team

My team brings together web content, performance marketing, and brand portals. It's quite a blend, wouldn't you agree? The challenge lies in letting each team maintain its strengths, while building bridges between them. We do this through shared rituals, transparent planning, and lots of open dialogue. I don't believe in one-size-fits-all management - people need different things to do their best work.

I focus on building confidence, cross-team curiosity, and ownership. Once people feel secure and inspired, they naturally start collaborating and pushing for better solutions. And that's where growth happens - for both the individuals and the team as a whole.

Agile Leadership - Flexible and Forward-Thinking

As a certified agile leader, I believe in building clarity, ownership, and adaptability. It's about fostering a culture of trust, experimentation, and team involvement in shaping how we work. And when it comes to AI, well, forget 'introducing' it - it's already here. We're using it daily, even if we don't realize it. So it's about becoming more conscious, confident users of AI, recognizing that we're already leveraging its power.

Our website gets this. We have a dedicated team focusing on how AI can evolve our business. But remember, AI may be powerful, but it doesn't have the empathy or emotional intelligence that humans bring to the table. That's still on us, and as leaders, our biggest job is to understand our people, help them grow, and ensure they feel seen - not just managed.
