Denmark Assumes EU Council Presidency in July 2025
Denmark is set to assume the presidency of the Council of the European Union on July 1, 2025, for a six-month term. This role, previously held by Poland, involves coordinating the work of the Council and chairing its meetings, alongside legislating for the EU alongside the European Parliament.
The Council presidency rotates among the Member countries every six months under the EU's trio presidency system. Denmark's presidency will follow a 18-month coordination period with two other countries. During its term, Denmark aims to create a competitive and ecological EU, driving growth through a green transition.
Denmark's motto for its presidency is 'A strong Europe in a changing world'. It plans to focus on promoting defense spending and supporting Ukraine. Decisions by the Council are usually made with a qualified majority based on proposals from the European Commission.
Denmark's presidency of the Council of the European Union, starting in July 2025, will play a crucial role in shaping the EU's future. With a focus on a strong, effective EU and a green transition, Denmark's leadership is expected to drive significant changes in European policy.
