The Bavarian Railway Company's (BEG) latest stats show a plummeting "punctuality rate" of 85.3%, meaning that approximately 15% of all regional trains and S-Bahns in Bavaria are more than six minutes behind schedule or worse. Ouch!
Breaking Records and Hearts
"This sucks, no sugarcoating. Delays and cancellations are becoming a way of life in Bavaria, and they're making commuters and tourists alike see red," admits BEG CEO Baerbel Fuchs.
The Root of the Problem
The German calculation method considers trains late if they are more than six minutes behind schedule. Christian Bernreiter, the Bavarian Transport Minister from the ruling CSU party, looks at the situation as a nationwide problem and isn't holding his breath for immediate improvement. He hopes for a quick fix through the government's planned investments in the rail network.
Curiously enough, nearly half of all delays stem from infrastructure issues such as faulty switches or level crossings.
A Standout in the Crowd
However, the Zugspitzbahn, a tourist-friendly single-line train in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, still holds the record for the most punctual railway in Bavaria.
Munich and Nuremberg's Mixed Performance
Unfortunately, the Munich S-Bahn and the most frequently used regional network in Bavaria saw their performance take a nose dive. Shocker, right? The Munich S-Bahn clocked an official punctuality rate of 87%, while the Nuremberg S-Bahn beat it with over 93%.
But not all delays are the fault of mechanical malfunctions. Heavy hitters like locomotive drivers' strikes, emergency medical services, and inclement weather conditions contributed to as much as a quarter of the cases.
Germany's Punctuality Patchwork
Now, keep in mind that other parts of Germany, like the Danish Rails, boast praiseworthy punctuality rates. However, Bavaria's regional trains are still struggling to catch up, leaving passengers feeling frustrated and bus schedules in shambles.
Progress, schmogress
"It's disappointing, but not entirely surprising," agrees CSU politician Bernreiter. Still, the BEG doesn't expect a significant improvement in the short term.
