Debut of QuantumScape and PowerCo's Solid-State Batteries in Ducati Motorcycle at IAA Mobility Event

In a groundbreaking development for the automotive industry, QuantumScape Corporation and PowerCo SE have debuted the world's first live demonstration of solid-state lithium-metal batteries powering an electric vehicle. The demonstration took place at the IAA Mobility event, showcasing the unique capabilities of these innovative batteries.

The demonstration bike, a Ducati V21L model, was equipped with QSE-5 battery cells produced using QuantumScape's Cobra production process. This marks the first time anode-free solid-state batteries have moved from laboratory discovery to real-world vehicle application.

Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, "The EV revolution is the biggest transformation the automotive industry has ever seen." He believes that solid-state batteries will redefine what's possible for high-performance, premium vehicles.

The expanded collaboration between QuantumScape and PowerCo aims to scale manufacturing and enable higher-volume prototype cell deliveries to PowerCo. The strategic non-exclusive collaboration and licensing arrangement has been expanded, including up to $131 million in new milestone-based payments.

The collaboration also includes the technology transfer required to bring QSE-5 to global markets. PowerCo and QuantumScape have integrated the proprietary Cobra separator manufacturing process into baseline production.

Dr. Siva Sivaram, CEO of QuantumScape, stated that the partnership with PowerCo and Ducati positions them to scale their transformative technology to gigawatt-hour production. He believes this collaboration will drive innovation in the battery market.

The batteries showcased unique capabilities, including an energy density of 844 Wh/L and the ability to withstand a 10C continuous discharge. The demonstration bike underwent a 12-minute fast charging from 10% to 80% state of charge, demonstrating the efficiency of the battery system.

The battery system was designed by specialists at VW Group-owned Audi specifically for QuantumScape's solid-state battery cells. The CEO of PowerCo, Frank Blome, stated that today's demonstration is just the beginning of their collaboration with QuantumScape. He believes this is a significant step forward in the quest for more efficient and high-performance electric vehicles.
