Croatia's Wood Pellets Exports Drop 15% in 2024, Italy Remains Top Destination
Croatia's wood exports in 2024 saw a significant drop, with Italy remaining the primary destination. Meanwhile, import prices and consumption levels continued their downward trend.
In 2024, Croatia's wood exports decreased by 15% to 500,000 tons, marking the third consecutive annual decline. Italy maintained its position as the main destination, accounting for 40% of total exports. Despite the overall decrease, the strongest increase in exports occurred in 2022, with Germany being the main recipient.
Croatia's wood market reached $500 million in 2024, following a decline from 2019. Production dropped to $400 million in 2024, after peaking at $600 million in 2022. Consumption also peaked in 2018 at $600 million but remained lower from 2019 to 2024.
The average wood import price in Croatia was $150 per ton in 2024, declining by 10% against the previous year. Italy had the highest import price at $200 per ton. Bosnia and Herzegovina was the largest supplier, with a 50% share of total imports. However, imports decreased by 15% to 600,000 tons in 2024, falling for the fourth year in a row.
Despite the decrease in exports and imports, Italy continued to be the main destination for Croatia's wood. The Croatian market and production experienced a decline, with consumption also lower than peak levels. The average import price dropped, with Italy having the highest price. Bosnia and Herzegovina remained the largest supplier, despite the overall decrease in imports.
