Straight-Up on Corona Aid Repayments: BSW Slams Handling, Demands Fairness
BSW voices criticism towards the management of deferred requests for Coronavirus financial assistance - Criticizes Management of Corona Aid Recall Process by BSW
Here's the deal: The Alliance for Progress, led by Sahra Wagenknecht in the Saxon State Parliament, is pissed off about the handling of repayment demands for Corona-immediate aid. They're saying the Saxon Reconstruction Bank's practices are a mess—buraucratic, opaque, and particularly crushing for small businesses and self-employed individuals. Jens Hentschel-Thöricht, a member of the Parliament, wants improvements to lighten the load on those affected.
Hentschel-Thöricht fired off two parliamentarian questions to address this, and got answers from the Ministry of Economics. Word is, over 66,000 companies have already been contacted for the reporting procedure on the aid they received. They've got to justify why the subsidies were needed back then. If their income exceeded expectations, they're supposed to cough up the cash.
Quite a few recipients of immediate aid have volunteered to pay back the money, and there were around 2,550 repayments due to audits and such, including instances due to a criminal complaint. However, repayments in the context of the reporting procedure aren't included in these figures, as that process only started in November 2024.
Hentschel-Thöricht isn't down with this. "Those who needed quick help during the pandemic are now, years later, under changed conditions, required to submit detailed reports—without an entrepreneur's allowance or consideration of their actual living expenses," he snarked. To make matters worse, the aid was marketed as non-repayable grants initially.
According to the Ministry of Economics, the recipients were made aware, from the approval notices and the FAQs published during the application phase, that the subsidies could only be used to compensate for the immediate economic hardship caused by the Corona pandemic during the performance period.
Hentschel-Thöricht insists, "The BSW demands an immediate halt to these repayments until a transparent, traceable, and fair review is ensured for all parties involved. It's unacceptable that those who trusted in state promises at the time are now being punished twice."
