Electric Vehicle Market in Australia Continues to Soar
The electric vehicle (EV) market in Australia is experiencing a significant surge, with EVs accounting for over 10% of new car sales in the first half of 2025 and reaching a record 15% in June. Tesla remains the leading EV brand, but Chinese manufacturers like BYD are making a strong impact, particularly in the PHEV segment and affordable EV market.
In the first five months of 2025, combined BEV and PHEV sales reached 12,528 units, the second-highest total of the year and the second-highest on record. This marks a significant increase compared to the same period in 2024, with over 14,000 additional EVs sold.
Tesla's Model Y continues to lead as the best-selling EV, with 10,431 units delivered in the first half of 2025. Despite a slight slowdown as it transitioned to an updated version, the Model Y recorded a 122.5% year-on-year gain in deliveries in May, totaling 3,580 registrations. The BYD Sealion 7, a PHEV, launched in February 2025 and quickly sold 1,961 units, securing second place.
Chinese manufacturers BYD and MG dominate the affordable EV segment, offering competitive prices with EVs starting around $30,000 before on-road costs. They have undercut legacy brands and expanded PHEV offerings, maintaining robust sales even after government Fringe Benefits Tax exemptions for PHEVs ended.
The MG EZS ended up ninth with 959 units, and the Kia EV3 rounded out the top 10 with 832 deliveries. The BYD Shark and Seal were responsible for 10,202 PHEV units sold in the first five months of 2025, holding a combined 67.9% share of the Australian PHEV market. The BYD Atto 3 ranked sixth in the Australian BEV market, with 1,278 registrations in the five-month period.
The Tesla Model 3's sales in May 2025 were 317, down 83.8% from 1,958 units 12 months previously. The Kia EV5 closed in on the Tesla Model 3 in the Australian BEV market, with 2,212 sales in the first five months of the year.
Despite strong growth, the Australian EV market faces challenges including affordability, limited charging infrastructure, concerns about vehicle reliability and resale value, as well as servicing support. Government policies and incentives, along with increasing consumer awareness about environmental benefits and cost savings, are major drivers of the current EV market expansion in Australia.
The Galaxy E5 ended up seventh after five months of the year, with 1,023 sales. The MG4 finished fourth in the Australian BEV market, with 2,017 sales, marking an 18.5% year-on-year drop. The BYD Seal 6 followed the BYD Shark in the PHEV standings, with 413 registrations in May. The BYD Sealion 7 underlined a strong performance with 1,961 registrations in the year to date.
In May 2025, the MG4 saw a significant drop in sales, recording just 280 units, compared to 641 in April. The BYD Seal 6, on the other hand, followed the BYD Shark in the PHEV standings, with 413 registrations in May. PHEV registrations in Australia saw a 70.5% uptick in May, totaling 2,744 units. BEV deliveries in Australia reached 9,784 units in May, marking an 8.6% year-on-year increase.
In conclusion, while Tesla continues to lead as a pure EV maker, BYD and other Chinese brands are rapidly expanding by offering competitively priced BEVs and PHEVs, contributing to a diverse and competitive electric vehicle market in Australia in 2025. The market's momentum is supported by policy and consumer shifts but tempered by infrastructure and affordability challenges.
