Dubai Metro: A Pillar of Public Transport in the Emirate
The Dubai Metro, one of the world's longest driverless metro systems, has been a game-changer for public transportation in the city since its launch in 2009. With a network spanning 90 kilometers and comprising 53 stations, the Dubai Metro has carried an impressive 2.527 billion passengers to date.
The metro system represents nearly 60% of total public transportation usage in Dubai, serving 900,000 passengers daily. The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is responsible for its operation, maintenance, and modernization.
The Dubai Metro's operations control centre, located in Al Rashidiya, monitors both the Red and Green lines and the live position of each train. This centre operates 24/7 to ensure the Metro runs safely and comfortably the next day. Artificial intelligence systems are being deployed to anticipate issues before they happen, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the service.
The Dubai Metro's success story doesn't end with its current network. The Blue Line project, estimated to cost Dh18 billion ($4.9 billion), is set to expand the network by 30 kilometers, more than half of it underground. This expansion will cater to neighborhoods like Dubai Creek Harbour, International City, and Mirdif, further enhancing the metro's reach. The Blue Line is expected to open in 2029.
Before the advent of the Dubai Metro, public transport in the city was limited to buses, taxis, and abras crossing Dubai Creek. The metro's introduction has saved about 1 billion car journeys since its launch, contributing significantly to reducing traffic congestion and promoting a greener city.
Maintenance enhancements and upgrades are performed during the night when the Metro is shut down. Routine maintenance occurs daily, with major upgrades happening every few years. The growing population of Dubai is not considered an issue for the train system, as operations can be adjusted during peak hours.
An emergency red button can halt the entire Dubai Metro network in case of an issue, ensuring swift action can be taken to address any problems that may arise. This robust infrastructure, coupled with its extensive network, makes the Dubai Metro a vital part of the city's public transportation landscape.
