Construction work on the Berlin-Hamburg rail corridor starts
The Berlin-Hamburg railway line, one of Germany's busiest, is undergoing a comprehensive renovation starting on August 1, 2025. This project, initiated by Deutsche Bahn (DB), aims to address the unreliability and poor punctuality of the train on this route. The renovation will last until the end of April 2026, resulting in a full closure of the 278-280 km line for about nine months [1][3][4].
The renovation is divided into three main construction sections: Hamburg–Büchen, Büchen–Dergenthin, and Dergenthin–Berlin. Six new transfer points will be constructed to enable more flexible traffic management, such as overtaking slower freight trains. The closure also affects surrounding sections due to signal box and control system replacements [1].
Long-distance services between Hamburg and Berlin will be rerouted to maintain direct connectivity, albeit with reduced frequency (roughly hourly trains instead of every 30 minutes) and longer travel times (approximately 45 minutes additional) [1][4]. Regional rail traffic is replaced by more than 170 buses as part of a comprehensive substitute service. Real-time travel information will be provided by Deutsche Bahn’s apps and platforms [1][4].
This renovation is part of Germany’s broader "Generalsanierung" (general overhaul) approach for heavily used railway corridors, aiming to consolidate all necessary work in concentrated blocks to reduce overall disruption. While work on the Berlin-Hamburg line begins in 2025, other major railway renovations across Germany are scheduled through 2036, with an adjusted timeline reflecting industry capacities and coordination with federal transport authorities [2].
However, the renovation project has been affected by two arson attacks on the north-south route in Düsseldorf, leading to numerous train cancellations and delays [5]. The police suspect sabotage, and a claim of responsibility was published on the "Indymedia" platform by a group called "Commando Angry Birds" [5].
Despite the challenges, the renovation program aims to improve the infrastructure, operations, and finances of the struggling railway by the end of 2027 [6]. The program includes the renovation of around 40 heavily loaded routes, with the Berlin-Hamburg route involving the replacement of 165 kilometers of tracks, 250 switches, modernization of signal boxes, and building six new ones [6].
In the first half of 2025, Deutsche Bahn incurred a loss of around 760 million euros after taxes, and the operating loss before interest and taxes (adjusted EBIT) was 239 million euros [2]. However, the group's revenue increased by 3.4% to 13.3 billion euros in the same period [2].
The target for the entire year is a punctuality rate of 65 to 70% for long-distance trains [7]. Regional traffic on connecting railway lines will be significantly impaired in some places during the construction phase [7]. Despite the disruptions, the railway line's renovation is a significant step towards improving the reliability and punctuality of the train service on this crucial route.

The renovation, due to commence on August 1, 2025, involves not only the Berlin-Hamburg railway line but also includes adjustments in the transportation sector, as alternative long-distance services will be rerouted and over 170 buses will be deployed for regional rail traffic [1][4]. Furthermore, the comprehensive renovation program, part of Germany’s Generalsanierung approach, extends to other sectors, particularly finance, as the aim is to improve the operations and finances of struggling railways by the end of 2027 [6].
