Construction Project at Karlsruhe underway: Full Road Shutdown Lasting 12 Weeks

The city of Karlsruhe is set to undergo significant changes as the renovation of two overpasses, the L 558 and L 559, begins. This project, expected to cost approximately 1.1 million euros, will reduce traffic to one lane per direction on the L 559 overpass at Leopoldshafen. The L 558 bridge, connecting Linkenheim-Hochstetten and Stutensee-Friedrichstal, has already been closed since August 11 for a 12-week renovation period.

The renovation work involves the demolition and rebuilding of the bridge caps, renewal of the sealing, and replacement of the asphalt driving surface. The aim is to make the aging crossing fit for the future.

During this period, the federal government will bear the costs of the projects, and the work will be conducted by the Karlsruhe Regional Council.

For cars and trucks, alternative routes have been designated. Those heading towards Karlsruhe from Linkenheim are advised to take the northern on-ramp of the B36, while those coming from Friedrichstal should use Leopoldshafen. For those heading towards Mannheim, the recommended route is via the Hochstetten on-ramp.

Cyclists and pedestrians are not left out. Cyclists should follow the KIT Campus Nord to the nearest southern bridge, while pedestrians are directed to alternative crossing points with safe sidewalks, such as nearby bridges or underpasses.

Detailed detour information can be found on Karlsruhe’s official city or transport websites, local news updates, or temporary signage at the site. It is essential to consult these sources for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

From August 12 to 19, the B36 will be noticeably affected as drainage pipes under the bridge will be renewed, and scaffolding for work on the superstructure will be erected. One lane will remain open in each direction during this period on the B36.

The renovation work extends beyond the bridge itself, affecting adjacent areas up to the next intersections. The project is expected to take 12 weeks in total.

This renovation project affects all commuters, including car, truck, and cyclist traffic. It is advised to plan your journey accordingly and allow extra travel time during this period. All detours for cars, trucks, and cyclists are available and signposted.
