New Scenic Road Along Mekong River to Boost Tourism and Trade in Northeast Thailand

The Naga Withi Mekong riverside road project, a 43.5-kilometre scenic road connecting the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge to Phra That Phanom in Mukdahan and Nakhon Phanom provinces, is currently 16% complete and scheduled for completion in 2027.

The key features of the project include a 6-meter wide road reinforced with steel, featuring 0-2 meter shoulders and proper drainage systems in community areas. Eleven bridges along the route are being expanded to improve connectivity, and scenic rest stops will be provided for travelers.

The route passes key landmarks such as the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, Manopirom Beach, Wat Song Khon, and Kaeng Kabao islet. The tourism signs, designed by the DRR, use natural tones and traditional imagery, featuring the mythical naga symbol and regional motifs like the naga fireball and full moon respect ceremonies.

The naga, a symbol of abundance and the Mekong River, is prominently displayed in the Naga Withi tourism signs. The project also incorporates cultural elements reflecting regional traditions such as Bung Fai Phaya Nak (naga fireball) and paying respect to the full moon.

The Naga Withi project aims to boost tourism along the Mekong River by providing a scenic travel route with cultural and natural attractions. It is also expected to enhance cross-border trade between Thailand and Laos via improved transport infrastructure. The project will strengthen local economies by creating jobs for residents and supporting rural road networks.

Once completed, the Naga Withi project is expected to boost tourism and cross-border trade in the region. The project has a budget of 615 million baht and is expected to be a significant contributor to regional development. The combined distance of the Naga Withi project is 43.4km, and it is currently 16% complete.

The Naga Withi project, with its improved transportation infrastructure, is anticipated to enhance both tourism and finance in the region by attracting more visitors and boosting cross-border trade. The project's scenic route, which passes significant landmarks and offers cultural and natural attractions, also has the potential to significantly impact the transportation industry.
