Construction of Salt Lake Bridge has been completed, offering free passage for commuters after a duration of four years.

The North Bridge of the Salzbachtal Bridge in Wiesbaden, a critical part of the A66 motorway, has been successfully moved into position and is now open to traffic. This significant event, which took place on August 1, marks the completion of a major traffic project in the Rhine-Main region.

The construction of the North Bridge was no easy feat, as it was carried out under extreme conditions, including cable problems, setbacks, and weather caprices. Despite these challenges, the Autobahn GmbH managed to keep the project on schedule, with the replacement construction being completed in under four years – a remarkable achievement compared to the usual ten-year timeline for such projects.

The aged infrastructure of the Salzbachtal Bridge was a critical bottleneck on one of Germany’s busiest highway routes, prone to congestion and maintenance issues. The completion of the North Bridge has enhanced capacity, improved traffic flow, and increased the reliability of this important artery. This upgrade will facilitate smoother transportation of goods and commuters within one of Germany’s most densely populated and economically vital regions, contributing to regional economic stability and growth.

The bridge was suddenly closed to traffic in the summer of 2021 due to an accident, acting as a wake-up call for the urgent need for repairs. Plans were accelerated, permits were expedited, and materials were procured within a few months, making it possible to complete the construction ahead of schedule.

Many factors came together to make the quick construction possible. Plans already in the drawer, material orders partially already initiated, central control by the Autobahn GmbH, unbureaucratic support from the municipality and the state, and political will to push through the matter all played a crucial role.

Minister Mansoori, who used the opportunity to appeal for faster procedures, better coordination, and trust in the experts for infrastructure policy in the future, wished everyone "a safe journey and many decades of stability" for the new bridge. A commemorative plaque was unveiled for the opening of the North Bridge, and the first vehicles rolled over it at a speed limit of 80 km/h.

With the completion of the North Bridge, the Salzbachtal Bridge in Wiesbaden is now prepared for future mobility projects. The second new partial bridge of the A66 in Wiesbaden is expected to be opened to traffic in the summer of 2025, further modernizing the region’s infrastructure and supporting the high traffic volumes characteristic of the Rhine-Main area.

Mende, who advocated for the A66 to be used more consciously as an east-west connection, welcomed the opening of the North Bridge as an important step towards reducing travel times and supporting the smooth flow of traffic in the Rhine-Main region. The completion of the North Bridge of the Salzbachtal Bridge is indeed a significant event for traffic infrastructure in the Rhine-Main region, marking a crucial step in modernizing the region’s infrastructure and supporting the needs of its growing population and economy.

The successful completion of the North Bridge project by Autobahn GmbH, despite challenging conditions, has not only expedited the transportation of goods and commuters in the Rhine-Main region but also paved the way for future modernization efforts in the region's infrastructure. With the finishing touches on the second new partial bridge of the A66 expected in 2025, the industry, finance, and transportation sectors in the Rhine-Main area can anticipate improved traffic flow and increased economic growth.
