Recently, Louisiana placed an anti-sweepstakes casino bill (SB 181) on its Governor's desk, marking a significant step in the state's efforts to regulate online gambling. The bill, which cleared the Louisiana legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support, sought to ban online sweepstakes casino-style games. However, Governor Jeff Landry vetoed the bill on June 13-16, 2025, citing concerns over its necessity and the potential for overly broad language.
Following the veto, the Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB) took enforcement actions against more than 40 unlicensed sweepstakes and offshore betting sites, issuing cease-and-desist orders to protect Louisiana residents.
Currently, the anti-sweepstakes bill SB 181 is vetoed and not law. For the legislature to override this veto, both the House and Senate must achieve a two-thirds majority vote to overturn the Governor’s decision. The legislature must reconvene for a veto session on the 40th day after the regular session adjourns unless either chamber votes to waive this timing.
