Conducting a financial investigation at National Front (Le Pen) party headquarters

In a dramatic turn of events, French police raided the headquarters of the Rassemblement National (RN) party on July 9, 2025, seizing documents and accounting records as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected illegal campaign financing. This raid, described as "spectacular and unprecedented" by RN leader Jordan Bardella, is linked to a judicial investigation opened in July 2024 following reports from institutional sources.

The probe is examining whether the party funded campaigns through illegal loans from private individuals between January 1, 2020, and July 12, 2024. This investigation extends to the 2022 French presidential campaign, the 2022 legislative elections, and the 2024 European elections.

No charges have been filed yet, but the party and its leaders view the investigation as part of a political witch hunt aimed at keeping them out of power. This sentiment is echoed by Bardella, who stated that the action is part of a new campaign to harass the party.

The investigation also involves allegations of inflated or fictitious invoices. These invoices, it is claimed, were later included in applications for state reimbursement of campaign expenses. The main offices of several companies and the residences of the CEOs of these companies were also searched as part of the investigation.

This is not the first time RN leader Marine Le Pen and her party have faced legal issues. Le Pen, the party, and other party officials were convicted by a court last month for misusing EU funds. Le Pen has appealed the verdict and has turned to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Bardella called the raid a serious attack on pluralism and democracy, emphasising the party's commitment to upholding the principles of transparency and accountability. The RN remains active in French politics, despite these challenges. The outcome of the current investigation is yet to be seen, but it promises to bring significant developments in the political landscape of France.

  1. The ongoing investigation into the Rassemblement National (RN) party's suspected illegal campaign financing, which extends to the 2022 French presidential campaign, the 2022 legislative elections, and the 2024 European elections, has raised questions about the party's funding sources in the world of politics and finance.
  2. The probe also encompasses allegations of inflated or fictitious invoices, accused of being later included in applications for state reimbursement of campaign expenses, indicating a potential business irregularity within the party.
