Concerns rise in maritime sector over decreasing passenger traffic along the Norwegian shoreline

The Kiel Canal, a significant waterway for the maritime industry in Germany and Europe, connecting the North and Baltic Seas for fast, cost-effective, and climate-friendly transport, has been facing numerous challenges in recent months.

These challenges have resulted in a significant decrease in the traffic of ships in the Kiel Canal during the second half of 2023. The regular delays in the locking process due to staff shortages affecting the water and shipping administration have attributed to this decrease.

The longer passage duration has increased the demand for pilots and canal controllers, which cannot be covered immediately due to long training times. As a result, there have been waiting times before Brunsbüttel for pilots, and a general 20% speed reduction to 12 km/h has been in effect in the Kiel Canal since July 1, 2023, to prevent further damage to the canal bed.

The Kiel-Canal Initiative e.V., a coalition of various companies, chambers of commerce, institutions, associations, clubs, and regional authorities advocating for the functional preservation and future-proofing of the Kiel Canal, has emphasized the importance of addressing these issues. They have urged the federal government to take immediate action, including the assignment of specialized personnel to the Waterways and Shipping Office NOK.

Ingo Berger, the Chairman of the "Nautical Association of Kiel," and Jens B. Knudsen, the Chairman of the Kiel-Canal Initiative e.V., have expressed concern about the future attractiveness of the Kiel Canal due to ongoing delays and breakdowns. They have also called for a permanent halt to job cuts at the Waterways and Shipping Office (WSV) and for the creation of attractive working conditions at the WSV.

Moreover, both associations have pointed out significant shortcomings in the operation and maintenance of the Kiel Canal. The Kiel-Canal Initiative e.V. has emphasized the importance of renovating the Kiel Lighthouse for traffic safety within the trans-European network. They also underscored the crucial role of the energy-saving function of NOK and the Kiel Lighthouse in the ecological transport transition and the additional costs of alternative fuels in shipping.

Without specific details on the current issues causing the significant decrease in ship traffic, these are speculative suggestions based on general knowledge of maritime issues and initiatives. However, initiatives like the "Initiative Kiel-Canal" and the "Nautical Association of Kiel" might urge the federal government to invest in infrastructure, promote international cooperation, implement sustainable practices, and provide economic incentives to address these issues.

For more information, please contact Ingo Berger at the mobile number 0176/61482057 or Jens B. Knudsen at his office number 0431/9810. The Kiel-Canal Initiative e.V. was founded in late 2012 and continues to advocate for the functional preservation and future-proofing of the Kiel Canal.

  1. The energy sector could potentially collaborate with the Kiel-Canal Initiative to explore alternative fuel solutions for ships, reducing dependence on traditional, less eco-friendly fuels during the ongoing operational challenges.
  2. Amidst the declining traffic in the Kiel Canal, the automotive industry might need to consider alternative routes for transporting goods, considering the increased congestion and delays.
  3. Finance institutions could play a crucial role in providing support for infrastructure upgrades in the Kiel Canal, as suggested by the Kiel-Canal Initiative, as this might help in addressing the current challenges and ensuring the waterway remains an important player in the European transportation industry.
