Commissioner Kadri Simson of the European Commission travels to Oman, aiming to strengthen collaboration on hydrogen technology and the worldwide shift towards renewable energy.

European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson is currently in Oman, where he will participate in high-level conferences on hydrogen and discuss green hydrogen political engagement with Omani officials.

During his visit, Commissioner Simson will attend the Green Hydrogen Summit Oman (GHSO) on December 14. He will join the opening session and chair roundtable meetings with Omani and European energy companies.

On the same day, Commissioner Simson will visit the hydrogen center of the German University of Oman, Gutech.

The primary focus of Commissioner Simson's visit is to foster cooperation on hydrogen, as part of the EU's wider efforts to support the global energy transition and work towards the establishment of a global hydrogen market.

During the GHSO, Commissioner Simson and Oman’s Deputy Prime Minister Moahsin Al Hadhrami discussed the EU-Oman political engagement on green hydrogen. Their dialogue emphasized evaluating Omani green hydrogen production projects for adherence to European Union requirements, which is expected to facilitate export opportunities and ensure compatibility with EU’s green energy policies.

Oman's Vision 2040 aims for substantial investments to develop the hydrogen economy, targeting production of at least 1 million tons of hydrogen annually. This aligns well with Europe’s growing demand for green hydrogen as part of its energy transition.

Oman's commitments to becoming a key exporter of green hydrogen are underscored by its agreements with international partners, such as Switzerland’s Hynat for a green hydrogen project in Sohar free zone and the recent liquefied hydrogen export corridor deal linking Oman to European markets.

The visit and the discussions at GHSO are expected to strengthen technical and policy cooperation to support sustainable hydrogen production, adherence to international (EU) standards, and facilitate investment and trade flows in green hydrogen between Oman and the EU, thus advancing joint efforts in the clean energy transition.
