Collaborative undertaking initiated by leaders
A Coordination Center for Enhancing Water Retention in Forests Established
A significant stride towards flood prevention, climate change mitigation, and the future of local forests has been taken with the creation of a coordination center for enhancing water retention in forests. The project, with a total budget of approximately 268,500 euros, has secured funding from various sources, including the LEADER funding, the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia, the European Union, participating municipalities, and the Rhein-Sieg district.
The objectives of this project are multifaceted. The center aims to cool the surroundings, replenish groundwater, and stabilize the landscape water balance. To achieve these goals, the focus will be on small, natural interventions such as permeable dams, adapted path structures, and natural retention basins.
The coordination center will serve as a hub for connecting various stakeholders, including forest owners, forestry cooperatives, government agencies, universities, and citizen initiatives. By consolidating existing concepts and ideas and initiating new measures, the center seeks to enhance water retention in forests across municipal, city, and county borders.
The project's success is contingent on collaboration. The joint funding application by the steering committees of the LEADER regions Voreifel - Die Bäche der Swist and Zülpicher Börde has made this endeavor possible. The center's work will be instrumental in making forests more resilient to drought, wildfires, and heat, and in mitigating the effects of heavy rain events.
The project aligns with the objectives of regional climate protection. By emphasizing the importance of retaining water and strengthening forests for climate protection, the project aims to implement sustainable solutions for forests and the region across municipal boundaries.
The Cologne Regional Government has approved the project for the establishment of the coordination center. The center's task is to identify, plan, and oversee measures to enhance water retention in forests. The project is planned for a duration of three years and is significant for flood, heavy rain, nature, and climate protection in the region.
However, at the time of writing, information about the leader of the newly established coordination center for enhancing water uptake in forests in the region could not be found.
In conclusion, the establishment of this coordination center marks a pivotal milestone in the region's efforts towards flood prevention, climate protection, and the future of local forests. The project's objectives and focus on natural interventions are a testament to a sustainable and collaborative approach to climate change mitigation and forest conservation.
