Clean Cargo Connect Seeks €15M Boost for Hydrogen Refuelling Expansion

The 'Clean Cargo Connect' project has applied for a significant funding boost, seeking €15 million from the federal HyPerformer II program. The project aims to expand the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure between Hamburg and Bremen, with a total project volume of €32 million.

The project plans to produce green hydrogen using a two-megawatt electrolyser, enabling over 130 trucks to be refuelled. This will involve setting up five new hydrogen refuelling stations and two mobile refuelling solutions. The region of North-East Lower Saxony has been identified as having substantial potential for switching to hydrogen drives in heavy traffic and public transportation.

The 'Clean Cargo Connect' project is a collaboration between the H2.N.O.N network, the Erneuerbare Energien Hamburg (EEHH) cluster, and a broad consortium of businesses and scientific institutions. The project aims to replace diesel with hydrogen in freight transportation, with Hamburg and Lower Saxony cooperating to decarbonize transport. Approximately 40% of goods that reached the Hamburg port in 2021 were then transported further by truck in the hinterland. By 2026, at least 30 hydrogen-powered electric vehicles will be deployed, and over 150 hydrogen trucks will be in use by 2029.

The federal decision on HyPerformer II funding is expected in April 2023. If successful, the 'Clean Cargo Connect' project will significantly expand the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, supporting the switch to hydrogen-powered freight transportation in the region.
