CIPD Hires Professor Christopher Bones as the New Chair of its Board of Trustees
New CIPD Chair Focuses on AI and Future of Work
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has appointed Professor Christopher Bones as its new Chair of the Board of Trustees. Bones, a former winner of the UK Management Book of the Year for "The Cult of the Leader," takes over from Valerie Hughes D'Aeth, who has held the role since 2021.
Bones brings extensive commercial, entrepreneurial, and academic experience to his new role. He has held senior HR leader roles in Diageo and Cadbury and became a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD in 2002. In 2004, he was appointed Dean of Henley Business School.
As Chair, Bones will lead the CIPD's Board of Trustees in overseeing the strategic direction of the CIPD. He emphasizes the importance of preparing HR professionals to be central to business strategy while supporting workforce needs. Bones is particularly focused on "shaping the future of work," helping organizations to adapt responsibly and ethically to AI technologies, understanding their impact on skills and roles, and leveraging AI’s potential effectively and ethically in the workplace.
Under his leadership, CIPD will concentrate on enhancing HR capabilities to navigate AI-driven transformations in work environments. Bones will work alongside CEO Peter Cheese and his team, as well as the CIPD President Chloe Smith. Smith values Hughes D'Aeth's contribution as a Companion and leader within the community and the profession.
Valerie Hughes D'Aeth has grown the CIPD's membership to over 160,000 members internationally during her tenure as Chair. She will continue to be passionate about the profession and is leaving the organization in great hands. Hughes D'Aeth is stepping down as Chair to spend more time with her family.
The CIPD expresses gratitude to Hughes D'Aeth for her leadership and commitment. She has been instrumental in the CIPD's strategic investment in digital and organizational transformation.
