CII Celebrates 125 Years of India's Industrial Growth
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), established in 1895, celebrates its 125th anniversary this year. Originally known as the Engineering and Iron Trades Association (EITA), it has evolved significantly, reflecting India's industrial growth and diversification.
CII was founded by five pioneering engineering companies in 1895. It began as the Engineering Association of India (EAI) in 1942, supporting small and medium engineering firms. In 1974, it merged with the Indian Engineering Association (IEA), established in 1912, to form the Association of Indian Engineering Industry (AIEI). This was later renamed the Confederation of Engineering Industry (CEI) in 1986.
Post India's liberalization in 1992, CEI became the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to mirror its expanded role and diverse sectors. Today, CII offers services through nine Centres of Excellence, covering quality, leadership, sustainability, and technological transformation. It undertakes initiatives under four pillars: policy advocacy, building competitiveness, expanding global footprint, and creating an equitable society.
CII, marking its 125th anniversary in 2020, has adopted a new logo symbolizing its mission for the future: 'Business and Beyond'. It continues to work in partnership with the Government, industry, civil society, and other stakeholders for India's development, with a focus on early childhood education, women empowerment, disaster relief, and climate change resilience through its CII Foundation.
