China Assembles Giant 16MW Wind Turbine for Offshore Power
China has successfully assembled a colossal wind turbine in Beihai, with a rotor diameter of 252 meters, equivalent to seven football fields. This 16-megawatt turbine, featuring China's first dynamic ballast system, is set to generate enough electricity to power several thousand households annually.
The turbine, a product of the state-owned China Three Gorges Corporation, boasts domestically produced key components. These include mooring lines, gearboxes, and the innovative dynamic ballast system, which adapts to varying wind and wave conditions. The next step involves towing the turbine to a deep-water site for installation, testing, and connection to the power grid.
The project, led by the corporation that built the Three Gorges Dam, signifies a significant step in China's wind power development. It demonstrates the country's capability to produce critical wind turbine components and collaborate with industrial partners like Goldwind.
The 16-megawatt wind turbine, with its advanced dynamic ballast system and domestically produced components, is poised to make a substantial contribution to China's renewable energy sector. Once installed and operational, it will generate approximately 44.7 million kWh of electricity each year, providing a clean and sustainable power source for numerous households.
