Chevron's El Segundo Refinery Fire Fully Extinguished, No Injuries Reported
A fire broke out at Chevron's oil refinery in El Segundo, California, on Thursday night. The blaze was fully extinguished by Friday morning, with no injuries reported and no evacuations ordered.
The fire started around 9:30 p.m. at a processing unit in the southeast corner of the refinery. It did not spread beyond the refinery's fence line. Residents nearby described feeling a rumble and seeing the sky turn orange.
Chevron has announced a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire once it is fully extinguished. The agency encouraged residents to check local real-time air quality and stay indoors if they see or smell smoke or elevated pollution levels. While local air quality monitors showed no concerns on Friday morning, the South Coast Air Quality Management District detected elevated levels of volatile organic compounds overnight near the refinery.
The refinery, which can process up to 290,000 barrels of crude oil a day, including gasoline, jet, and diesel fuels, is now operating safely. All roads reopened by Friday morning. Chevron will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
