Leo XIV, the newly anointed pontiff, might find solace in the affinity allegedly shared with his prestigious predecessor, Pope Francis. Photos of the two seem to confirm their close bond, and Leo XIV's inaugural speech echoed Francis' words thrice. However, Leo XIV's road ahead may not be as smooth as bonding moments suggest.

A Legacy Laden with Unfinished Business

Francis left Leo XIV with a smorgasbord of unresolved matters. While the direction of the emerging pontificate appears clear, the tasks piling up are manifold. These include the Vatican's financial struggles, the fight against corruption, synodality, decentralization, de-bureaucratization, and measures against abuse, among others. The latter includes combating clerical sexual abuse, expanding the diaconate for women, and considering the blessings of same-sex couples.

Power Struggles and Resistance

Several topics, like the policy on remarried divorcees and the role of women, have caused internal discord, stirring up storms within the Vatican and among even remote dioceses globally. Though extremely conservative cardinals and theologians have staunchly opposed such openings, the next pope will have to manage these conflicts delicately.

Digging Out of the Red: The Vatican's Fiscal Woes

Moreover, the Pope is not only a spiritual leader but also the head of the Vatican State. Managing this complex entity, teeming with more than 5,000 employees worldwide, calls for addressing the annual budget deficit, currently hovering around €80 million. Despite Francis' attempts to cut cardinals' salaries and initiate a "Zero Deficit" program, little progress has been achieved. Poor investments, corruption, and dwindling donations, primarily from the U.S. and Germany, continue to pose significant challenges.

Sexual Abuse: Tackling the Invisible Elephant

The Church's handling of abuse cases remains contentious as the Church seems reluctant to pursue each case decisively. The ongoing investigation into the Emanuela Orlandi case, a young girl who disappeared in 1983, keeps resurfacing rumors concerning the Vatican's involvement. Francis, however, expressed readiness for investigations and delegated the task to the Vatican's chief prosecutor, Alessandro Diddi.

The Rising Tide: An American Pontiff

One of the most intriguing aspects of Leo XIV's tenure is his American heritage, which marks a change from the Church's recent preference for European popes. Navigating his homeland's complexities while interpreting the Gospel in his unique way could potentially shake up the Catholic Church.

Common Threads

Though the meanings of their lives unfolded in different parts of the world, both Francis and Leo XIV share a common bond in their interpretations of the Gospel. Leo XIV might choose to continue the path Frankish started, albeit with a more practical approach, as pragmatism is said to be one of his defining characteristics.

Enrichment Data:

Pope Leo XIV, as the successor to Pope Francis, faces several unfinished reforms and challenges related to Vatican finances, abuse cases, views on same-sex couples, and women’s roles in the Church. The late Pope Francis, during his reign, introduced various reforms but faced resistance, leading to numerous unfinished projects.

Unfinished Reforms and Challenges

Vatican Finances

  • Financial Transparency and Reform: Pope Francis sought to improve financial transparency and accountability through creating the Secretariat for the Economy, but the reform process is still incomplete.
  • Institute for Works of Religion (IOR): The IOR needs further audits and controls to ensure its operations align with applicable laws.
  • London Property Scandal: The purchase of a London building led to significant financial losses and is under investigation, highlighting the need for effective internal controls.

Abuse Cases

  • Acknowledging the efforts of Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis worked towards addressing clerical sexual abuse by changing church laws to punish abusers and their enablers. However, the issue persists as a substantial challenge for the Church.

Same-Sex Couples

  • Pope Francis’s approach to same-sex couples was more pastoral and inclusive, evident in his famous statement, "Who am I to judge?" However, formal policy changes remain limited, and the next pope must decide if a more open stance should be maintained or adjusted.

Women’s Roles in the Church

  • With a more proactive approach than his predecessors, Pope Francis promoted women to leadership positions within the Vatican. However, the priesthood remains closed to women, leaving the next pope to decide on advances in women's roles or maintaining the status quo.
  1. The newly appointed Pope Leo XIV might find shared commonalities with his predecessor, Pope Francis, in their interpretations of the Gospel, as they both navigated different parts of the world.
  2. Despite Leo XIV's American heritage marking a departure from the Church's recent preference for European popes, he may choose to continue the path Francis started, albeit with a more practical approach, to address the numerous unfinished challenges, such as the Vatican's financial struggles, the fight against corruption, and the handling of abuse cases.
  3. As the head of the Vatican State, Leo XIV will have to manage the Vatican's complex entity, which includes more than 5,000 employees worldwide, and address the annual budget deficit of around €80 million, a challenge that has persisted despite Francis' attempts to cut cardinals' salaries and initiate a "Zero Deficit" program.
