Capita's Role as Royal Mail Pension Scheme Administrator Ends After 2023 Cyber-Attack

Capita's role as administrator for the Royal Mail Statutory Pension Scheme is set to end on January 13, 2025, following a 2023 cyber-attack that affected nearly 8000 claimants. The new administrator remains unnamed. Meanwhile, the Mineworkers' Pension Scheme will replace Capita on the same date.

The 2023 cyber-attack, carried out by the Black Basta ransomware group, occurred in March. Unauthorized access lasted from March 22 to March 31. Capita acknowledged 'limited data exfiltration' a month later but has not commented on delays in notifications. Some affected individuals, like a mining veteran, only learned about the breach from the media three months after it happened.

Barings Law is leading a High Court case against Capita, the largest such action against the outsourcing giant. The Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) warned its members about the breach in May 2023. Despite the incident, other pension schemes like the Royal Mail Statutory Pension Scheme continue to work with Capita.
