Building initiative enacted at both federal and cantonal levels proves successful
The building program, a series of measures aimed at improving energy efficiency through envelope renovation and heating replacement, has generated a substantial economic impact. According to a recent study, the program has contributed a total annual gross value creation of 535 million francs.
The evaluation of the program's macroeconomic effects was based on data from the years 2021 to 2023. The study, conducted by EBP on behalf of EIT.swiss, Building Envelopes Switzerland, the Conference of Cantonal Energy Specialists, Raiffeisen Switzerland, Thurgau Cantonal Bank, and WWF Switzerland, used a combination of internal and external data sources, including the federal statistical office's building price index.
The study found that 250 million francs of the total value creation accrued to the construction industry, creating over 3700 full-time jobs, with the majority in the construction sector. The program also strengthens value creation, with an announced promotion achieving an economic benefit of more than a franc for every franc invested.
In addition to its economic benefits, the building program also reduces environmental costs and dampens the increase in winter electricity consumption. By improving energy efficiency, the program contributes to Switzerland's efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
The evaluation of the program's effects was supplemented with data from external sources, including the federal statistical office. The study found that the program generates tax revenue and creates jobs, making it a valuable investment for the Swiss economy.
Overall, the building program has proven to be a successful initiative, delivering significant economic, environmental, and social benefits. As the evaluation period for the program's effects extends up to and includes the year 2023, it is expected that the program will continue to make a positive impact on Switzerland's economy and environment in the years to come.
