Dresden's Carola Bridge to Undergo Reconstruction Starting 2027

The city of Dresden has announced plans to reconstruct the Carola Bridge, with construction work slated to commence in 2027. The prolonged construction period, estimated to last approximately two and a half years, was announced at a citizen's information event held at Dresden Town Hall.

City officials, including Lord Mayor Stephan Kühn and the head of the Streets and Roads Department, Simone Prüfer, revealed that the bridge's reconstruction would take a more expedient route—a replacement new build. This strategy aims to circumvent the time-consuming planning approval process, potentially advancing the undertaking by three to six years. Proposed adaptations include wider bike lanes, reduced vehicle lanes, and alterations such as two instead of three bridge spans.

However, a specific completion date remains unspecified. Prüfer attributed this uncertainty to the intricate approval process. The city council is set to decide on the replacement new build plan without a lengthy planning procedure, with the vote scheduled for June.

Lord Mayor Stephan Kühn dismissed comparisons with the reconstruction of Genoa's collapsed bridge, highlighting that the framework conditions in Dresden are entirely unlike those in Genoa. The Italian President declared a state of emergency after the bridge collapse, allowing for extraordinary measures to expedite the project. In contrast, Dresden is adopting the fastest possible route without such exceptional circumstances.

The western traffic lane of the Carola Bridge unexpectedly collapsed over about 100 meters in September 2024. Since then, the remaining parts have been deemed acutely at risk of collapse. Nearly complete is the demolition of the collapsed bridge span C, with the removal of bridge spans A and B in the final stages.

This reconstruction endeavor in Dresden reflects broader challenges in Germany's infrastructure projects, including bureaucratic hurdles and resource constraints. Despite the comparatively extended timeline, city officials are aiming for a swift and efficient process.

The proposed reconstruction of Dresden's Carola Bridge, commencing in 2027, is not only ascertained to involve modifications such as wider bike lanes and reduced vehicle lanes, but also a replacement new build to expedite the process. Given the intricate approval process, a specific completion date remains undetermined. As this undertaking falls under the city's community policy, potential implications on industry, finance, public-transit, and transportation sectors are anticipated.
