BMW allocates £1 million for the installation of electric vehicle charging stations at UK's National Parks.
BMW's "Recharge in Nature" Program Brings Green Energy and Biodiversity to UK National Parks
In a groundbreaking three-year partnership, BMW UK and the UK National Parks have joined forces to launch the "Recharge in Nature" program. The initiative, which started in 2022, is focused on expanding electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and supporting biodiversity projects within all 15 UK National Parks.
As part of the partnership, BMW UK has invested £1 million, funding the installation of 135 new EV charging sockets at strategic locations across the parks. These charging points are designed to improve EV access for both local residents and tourists, with eight National Parks already benefitting from the new technology, including the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Dartmoor, and Bannau Brycheiniog. BMW aims to install devices in the remaining seven parks by the end of November 2025.
The "Recharge in Nature" program extends beyond EV infrastructure, with a strong focus on nature restoration and biodiversity. BMW has collaborated with organizations like Cumbria Wildlife Trust to restore habitats in the Lake District, aiming to increase natural resilience and support community wellbeing.
Other biodiversity activities include the creation and restoration of 35 dew ponds in the Cairngorms, and funding for natural flood management projects at Eryri National Park in Llyn Tegid. In addition, an inclusive transport project is being undertaken in Bannau Brycheinog, and for the Broads National Park in Norfolk, electric boat charging will also be installed, alongside car chargers.
Emily Barrow, brand communication manager at BMW UK, stated that the Recharge in Nature project demonstrates how business partnerships can drive meaningful progress. She said, "By combining clean transport access with nature conservation, we are creating a lasting legacy that contributes to greener, healthier Park environments and supports local communities."
The partnership with UK National Parks also includes initiatives to engage young people with the outdoors. For instance, Dartmoor National Park has appointed a new Young Engagement Ranger, helping more than 1,300 young people to enjoy outdoor experiences.
With the "Recharge in Nature" program, BMW is demonstrating a commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship, setting an example for other businesses to follow. As the program continues to roll out across the UK, it promises to bring cleaner, greener transportation and a healthier environment to some of Britain's most treasured natural landscapes.
