Bloggers face lawsuits by KD for non-payment of taxes
In Kazakhstan, a significant shift has been observed in the taxation of bloggers and influencers, as part of broader efforts to collect taxes on digital activities. This change was evident in 2024, when tax revenues from these online personalities surged by 60%, reaching approximately 3.2 billion tenge (around $5.9 million) compared to the previous year [1].
The surge in tax collection is a direct result of the government's increased scrutiny and regulation of income generated by bloggers. On February 19, the State Revenue Committee recalled 169 notifications due to technical glitches in their sending and processing [2]. Furthermore, 854 digital content authors received notifications to pay taxes, and the Ministry of Finance is currently working with 234 bloggers, conducting regular document checks [3].
As of March 13, 63 bloggers have paid 105 million tenge in taxes after receiving letters from the State Revenue Committee. However, the specific details about ongoing legal proceedings against individual bloggers are not readily available [1]. Minister Madiev has urged all bloggers to be cautious when conducting business.
The Ministry of Finance has also announced legal proceedings are underway with seven Kazakh bloggers for failing to pay taxes [4]. On February 13 and 14, the State Revenue Committee sent notifications of suspected underreporting of income to 594 digital content authors, alleging that the underreported income totaled 53.3 billion tenge [5].
In a bid to address the issue, Minister Madiev has emphasised the importance of transparency and compliance in the digital economy. He reiterated that the committee later resent the recalled notifications, ensuring that all digital content authors have been given ample opportunity to comply with their tax obligations [2].
