Bishop Hanke Resigns from Post

Bishop Gregor Maria Hanke, the longest-serving incumbent bishop in Bavaria, has stepped down after more than 18 years in office. His farewell service, held at Eichstätt Cathedral, was a simple and heartfelt affair, reflecting his wishes.

During the service, Bishop Hanke quoted a Bible verse, warning against considering oneself indispensable. He thanked those who had supported him over the years and was praised by Acting Bishop Alfred Rottler as a "bridge-builder between the Church and society."

Alfred Rottler, the provost, is now leading the Eichstätt diocese as acting bishop. Rottler, a well-respected figure within the diocese, is known for his leadership and is trusted by the diocese's clergy and community. Before assuming his current role, he held various pastoral and administrative positions within the diocese.

As diocesan administrator, Rottler is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and spiritual leadership of the diocese during the period without a permanent bishop. He ensures continuity and stability, maintaining church functions, supporting clergy, and managing administrative tasks until a new bishop is appointed by the Vatican.

Bishop Hanke, now known as Father Gregor, is remembered for his spirituality, theological depth, and commitment to democracy. He was also a strong advocate for environmental protection, earning him the nickname "the green bishop." Notably, he confronted the issue of abuse and engaged in dialogue with victims.

In addition, Bishop Hanke launched a transparency initiative to address financial irregularities. His resignation, announced unexpectedly at Pentecost, marks the end of an era for the Eichstätt diocese.

Meanwhile, the longest-serving bishop in Bavaria, Archbishop of Munich and Freising, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, has been in office since 2008. As the Eichstätt diocese enters a new chapter, the faithful bid farewell to Bishop Hanke, grateful for his service and looking forward to the future under Acting Bishop Rottler's leadership.

In light of Bishop Hanke's resignation, the faithful may now consider applying for positions within the Eichstätt diocese, particularly in the financial sector, as a transparency initiative has been launched. Acting Bishop Rottler, known for his leadership and administrative skills, will oversee the business operations and spiritual leadership during the transition period.
