Bike Path Delayed until 2027

The construction of the Rhine Cycle Route near Rüdesheim, a popular tourist destination in Germany, has been halted due to the premature termination of the construction contract by Hessen Mobil, the road and traffic authority in the German state of Hesse.

The termination of the contract has significantly delayed the Rhine Cycle Route construction project, pushing the completion date to 2027. The provisional path, intended to close the gap in the Rhine Cycle Route between Kaub and Rüdesheim, will not be built until the railway renovation and the need for the B 42 for rail replacement traffic are addressed.

Kathrin Brückner from Hessen Mobil stated that the contract termination was unavoidable to avoid further delays. The goal is to expand the route on the railway embankment on the other side of the B 42, but plans to continue the cycle path on this section now require a new attempt.

The B 42 will be used as a route for rail replacement traffic during the renovation of the "Right Rhine" corridor, making an earlier start to construction of the Rhine Cycle Route impossible. Hessen Mobil plans a comprehensive renovation of the "Right Rhine" corridor next year, followed by the railway's renovation in 2023.

A new start for the Rhine Cycle Route construction is planned from 2027 onwards. In the meantime, the removal of a traffic light system and the construction site and related detours will be removed, with the road scheduled to reopen to traffic in calendar week 33.

It is unclear what specific factors led to the premature termination of the construction contract for the Rhine Cycle Route. Possible reasons could include funding issues, environmental concerns, planning or permit delays, or unexpected technical challenges. For an accurate and detailed explanation, it would be necessary to consult official announcements from Hessen Mobil, local government statements, or regional news sources covering Rhine Cycle Route developments near Rüdesheim.

The unavoidable contract termination by Hessen Mobil has potentially affected not only the Rhine Cycle Route, but also other sectors of transportation, such as public-transit and automotive industries, due to the delays it could cause. The completion of the Rhine Cycle Route, crucial for German tourism and transportation infrastructure, has now been pushed back to 2027. Meanwhile, without the provisional path on the B 42 for the Rhine Cycle Route, the finance industry might face challenges in securing funds for alternative infrastructure projects.
