Bicycle Prohibition on Viale Garibaldi: "Enhanced Enforcement Measures Announced"
This summer, the spotlight's on enhancing bike and park safety in Vercelli. The Municipality of Vercelli has rolled out a security package with a stronger police presence, as Mayor Roberto Scheda emphasized in a recent interview. The emphasized area? None other than Viale Garibaldi, where cycling and using electric scooters have been expressly forbidden, according to the latest ordinance. Nightlife management is also high on the agenda, as local residents' committees step up their efforts now that the academic year has ended and the evenings are warmer.
The Public Order Committee is working on outlining the specifics of evening and nighttime controls, including added self-defense tools for officers, like pepper spray.
Six-hour Training Sessions
"They'll be trained for six hours before putting those tools to use," explains Councilor Paolo Campominosi. Officers requested this training following some risky interventions in the past. In addition, anti-cut vests are being procured for officers conducting checks on squatters, given the new security measures. The Vercelli Municipality is collaborating with the ATAP to combat fare evasion on public transportation, ensuring a safe travel experience for residents who consistently pay their fares.
Viale Garibaldi Controls
There's also a chapter on enforcing controls on Viale Garibaldi. With the new PNRR works, the avenue has undergone a transformation, aligning with the guidelines of the ecological transition, and is now designated as a pedestrian-only zone. This change necessitates ensuring that it is exclusively used as intended, as specified in the recently published municipal police ordinance.
Citizens using the avenue have requested more stringent controls on bicycles and electric scooters, but the Municipality has yet to issue any fines. "At present, we're focusing on preventative and deterrent activities, with no fines issued yet, pending the installation of signs," says Campominosi. Residents in the city center also want controls, particularly on weekends. However, they report no significant inconveniences at the moment. "We'll observe the situation on the first Saturday after the schools close. The addition of bicycle patrols is welcomed, but it's crucial that the center remains peaceful and clean," the historic center residents' committee notes.
