Baroness Slams Government Over Slow Boiler Upgrade Scheme Progress
Baroness Parminter, Chair of the House of Lords' Climate Change Committee, has penned an open letter to the government, expressing sharp criticism over the lacklustre response to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The scheme, aimed at replacing gas boilers with heat pumps, has fallen short of its targets, with only 9,888 vouchers distributed in its first eight months, despite an annual target of 30,000.
The scheme, launched to tackle the UK's 17% greenhouse gas emissions from heating homes, has been criticized for its slow progress. The government plans to launch a marketing campaign to boost awareness, but Baroness Parminter has slammed ministers for failing to adequately promote the scheme. The Lords Climate Change Committee has warned that the national target for green heating is 'very unlikely' to be met.
Heat pumps, which are three times more efficient than gas boilers, are set to become cheaper to run as the UK transitions to renewable electricity. However, only 50,000 heat pumps have been installed nationwide so far, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and uptake of the scheme.
Baroness Parminter's criticism underscores the need for the government to step up its efforts in promoting the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. With heat pumps offering significant efficiency gains and set to become more affordable, the scheme's success is crucial in meeting the UK's climate change goals.
